Smart Homes: The UK smart home market remained strong during the continued economic recession in the UK, as the high-end luxury sector showed 7% growth in value year on year, especially around Greater London. BSRIA estimated the Smart Home market to be at €39.7 million in 2012.

The main emphasis of concentration stayed in the luxury segment due to continuing inelastic demand in the high-end housing sector in the UK. Although there were some expectations that this product might be penetrating the mid-housing segment, this has not been fully materialised yet. However, there has been a trend for less expensive smart home solutions mainly due to the widespread availability of KNX–based products in the market. KNX-based products continue to gain further recognition on the market are expected to reach up to 60% of the market by 2015. With the overall expected investment into the prime luxury residential market in the UK earmarked to reach £38 million over the next decade in the UK, the smart home segment has got a far reaching potential.

Home Energy Management Systems: HEMS market is relatively small and is estimated to be worth €7.8 million in 2012. The HEMS market in the UK is expected to become more noticeable due to the efforts of British Gas advancing energy management solutions and planned smart meter roll-out that is predicted to start in 2015. By 2015 the value of the HEMS market is estimated to more than double and provide identifiable benefits for the customers to justify further market penetration and market acceptance. A new development can be the introduction of a monthly service charge, however it is not expected to become a reality in the next 2-3 years, as it might deter the customers away from HEMS products.

Intelligent Environmental Controls: Intelligent environmental controls market is primarily confined to medium to high end households that require a greater degree of temperature control and provision of multi-zone control. The market development is stalled by conservatism of consumers and installers, but, nevertheless, it is set to grow despite the downward trends in construction, mostly due to residential refurbishment
