• The SIB market is driven by backup power requirement from the growing information technology/Information technology enabled services (IT/ ITeS) sector, widening banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) network and automated teller machine (ATM) expansion, rising automation across business enterprises, mounting power deficit, increasing need for backup batteries in critical equipment and processes, and burgeoning enterprise solutions.
• The Indian manufacturers are expanding their operations to meet the growing demand for SIB batteries both in the domestic as well as in the international market.
• As the Indian economy is going through economic downturn, customers are pressurising suppliers to offer more discounts. This is forcing SIB battery manufacturers to reduce the total operational cost and introduce economies of scale into their business so as to maintain their overall margins and remain profitable.
• Lead is the chief raw material for SLA battery manufacturers, and constitutes approximately 75% of the total raw material cost. Continuous hike in the price of lead coupled with rupee depreciation against the dollar, pushed up the cost of production and narrowed the profit margins of the manufacturers in FY2013 (base year).
• Most of the unorganised suppliers use recycled or secondary lead to manufacture SLA batteries. They cater majorly to the inverter end-user segment.
• The SLA batteries market in FY2013 was dominated by the top four suppliers. They are Exide Industries Ltd. (Exide), Amara Raja Batteries Ltd. (Amara Raja), Luminous Power Technologies Pvt. Ltd. (Luminous) and HBL Power Systems Ltd. (HBL).
