World demand to rise nearly 7% annually through 2017
World demand for water treatment equipment is expected to grow almost seven percent per year through 2017. Developing parts of the world -- such as the Asia/Pacific, Eastern Europe, and Africa/Mideast regions -- are expected to show strong growth, with gains supported by improved access to treated drinking water and sanitation facilities, particularly through greater use of filtration and membrane systems. Expanded manufacturing and industrial activities requiring the use of water treatment equipment such as membrane systems and disinfection equipment will also promote growth in these regions. More modest gains are expected in mature markets for water treatment equipment -- such as North America and Western Europe -- with demand for membrane systems and disinfection equipment supported by continued efforts to reduce chemical use by replacing chlorine and other chemicals with water treatment equipment, and in the US by an ongoing rebound in production output after the 2007-2009 recession.
Membrane equipment to offer best growth prospects
Increasing standards for process and supply water in manufacturing and other industrial applications in all regions will contribute to strong growth prospects for membrane equipment, which is projected to increase its market share to 20 percent by 2017. Membrane equipment demand will also be promoted by greater interest in water reuse, particularly in developed countries, and by the growing market for water desalination equipment, particularly in the Middle East and Northern Africa. Disinfection equipment is also expected to benefit in North America, Western Europe, and other developed regions from the implementation of regulations limiting the levels of disinfection byproducts found in drinking water that has been treated with chemical disinfectants. The market for filtration equipment is relatively mature and faces competition from membrane systems and other newer technologies. As a result, demand for filtration equipment is expected to grow at a more modest pace, with most gains occurring in the municipal markets in developing parts of the world. Among other types of equipment such as thermal distillation equipment and evaporators, which are increasingly being replaced by membrane systems for use in desalination applications, demand is projected to rise at a slower rate.
Manufacturing market to see fastest gains in demand
The manufacturing market for water treatment equipment is expected to show the fastest gains through 2017. Continued improvement in manufacturing output, combined with ever-increasing standards for supply and process water quality, are expected to boost demand for water treatment equipment in pharmaceuticals processing, food and beverage production and other manufacturing. Additionally, many manufacturers in both developed and developing regions are reusing more process water and are increasing the level of treatment of wastewater, due to global concerns about the availability of fresh water and poorly-treated wastewater.
Gains in the municipal market, while slower than those in the manufacturing market, will be supported by the increased use of products such as disinfection equipment, membrane systems, and activated carbon systems. These systems are used to improve drinking water and wastewater quality in developed regions, while developing regions increase investment in all types of municipal water treatment equipment.
