Mobile Biometrics Solutions to Gain Prominence in the Larger Biometrics Landscape

Executive Summary

- Mobile biometrics solutions are expected to continue gaining prominence in the larger biometrics landscape, with innovation accelerating in smartphones, sensors, and cloud capabilities.
- Traditionally, governments have been the largest end-user group because of the technology’s strong capability to verify and authenticate identities. Key applications include border control, national ID programmes, and election campaigns.
- The advancement of mobile devices and sensor technologies is currently generating a shift toward the consumerisation of biometrics.
- Mobile payments are one of the key areas in which biometric data will be used to replace traditional PINs* and passwords for increased security in user identification and verification. The mobile payment ecosystem using biometrics is in a nascent stage and likely to gain traction as standards develop.

Definitions

This study provides insights into biometrics used in mobile payment.

Mobile Payment: Mobile payments are initiated by the use of a mobile device to authenticate and authorise transactions.

Types of Mobile Payment
SMS* Payment: The SMS payment method is popular and simple in nature. Users require a phone with SMS capability for transactions.
WAP* Payment: The WAP payment method requires a wireless application protocol facility present on the mobile device for Internet connection. The user can then initiate a transaction by using online payment options such as PayPal, Yahoo Wallet, Google Wallet, or by entering the user’s credit card credentials into the payment box provided on the company’s Web site.
NFC* Payment: NFC payment is a contactless method that transfers payment from mobile phones to point-of-sale devices using radio frequency identification.
Biometrics in Mobile Payment: This phrase refers to the use of biometric modalities such as fingerprint, face, iris, and voice for the authentication of mobile payment transactions.
Note: The study does not contain revenue forecast.

Biometrics Technologies
Fingerprint Scanning
This method requires contact between the fingerprint (imprints formed by the ridges and valleys in the finger) and the scanner.
Iris Recognition
This is a contactless method of identification based on the unique patterns found in an eye’s iris.
Facial Recognition
This is a contactless method of identification based on the scan of an individual’s facial features.
Vein Scan
This is a contactless method of identifying a person by automatically scanning the blood vessels at the back of the hand under near-infrared light. The vein scan of a human is unique. Vein patterns from twins, and even between an individual’s left and right hand, can be distinguished. Unlike thumbprints, this method is effective even if the hands are unclean.
Voice Recognition
This method works on the principle that an individual’s voice is unique and cannot be replicated. Various audio-capturing devices analyze voice data and translate it into electrical signals.
Palm Print
In palm print recognition, palm print features, which are composed of principal lines, wrinkles, minutiae, and delta points are captured as images and used for identification.
