BMI View: Vietnam's consumer electronics industry has expanded rapidly in recent years and is animportant force driving the country's strong economic performance. As Vietnam develops rapidly we expectrising wages over the medium term against a backdrop of low device penetration rates will drive spendinggrowth at a CAGR of 6.5%. This is however a deceleration from 2015 when the domestic market wasboosted by tariff reductions and retail sector liberalisation in 2015, and we caution that price sensitivitywill continue to be a central characteristic of the market right through to 2020.Latest Updates And Industry Developments

- Computer Hardware Sales: USD1.7bn in 2016 to USD2.1bn in 2020, a compound annual growth rate(CAGR) of +6.2%. The prospect for cannibalisation of notebook and tablet spending by the proliferationof smartphone ownership exists, but overall outlook still positive due to income growth trends.

- AV Sales: USD1.2bn in 2016 to USD1.5bn in 2020, a CAGR of 4.4%. Digital migration will supportexpansion of flat-panel TV set sales, which has substantial potential when compared to higher incomeemerging markets where the market is saturated.

- Handset Sales: USD3.4bn in 2016 to USD4.5bn in 2020, a CAGR of 7.4%. Due to relatively lowpenetration the first-time smartphone upgrade engine still has momentum, which should mean handsetspending growth outperforms over the medium term.
