Summary
Australia has high-quality black and brown coal deposits measuring 76.4 billion tonnes (Bnt) at the end of 2014. The country was ranked fourth in the world, with 8.6% of global proven coal reserves, of which sub-bituminous and lignite grade reserves accounted for 51.4%, and anthracite and bituminous grades accounted for 48.6%.

- Queensland and New South Wales (NSW) have substantial black coal resources, accounting for 96% of Australia’s total black coal economic demonstrated resources (EDR) in 2013. Brown coal resources are mainly found in the Latrobe Valley in Victoria, with other deposits in Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania.

Scope
The report contains an overview of the Australian coal mining industry together with the key factors affecting the industry. Further, it provides information about reserves, reserves by state, historic production and production forecast, production by grade and type, production forecast by selected mines, historic and forecast coal consumption and exports, consumption and exports by type, coal prices, the competitive landscape and active, exploration and development coal projects.

Reasons To Buy
Gain an understanding of the Australian coal mining industry, its reserves, and reserves by states, historic and forecast production, production by grade and type, historic and forecast coal consumption and exports, coal prices, demand drivers, active, exploration and development projects, the competitive landscape and the country's fiscal regime.

Key Highlights
- An estimated 473.6 million tonnes (Mt) of coal was produced in 2014, up by 3.2% over 2013.

- The average benchmark price of thermal coal for the Japanese Fiscal Year 2015 (JFY, April 2015 to March 2016) was US$67.8 per tonne, down by 17% over JFY2014.

- Black coal resources are mainly found in the states of Queensland and New South Wales (NSW), which respectively accounted for 58% and 38% of the total economic demonstrated resources (EDR) of black coal in 2013.

- Brown coal deposits are found in Victoria, with other deposits in Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania. Around 19% of the world’s recoverable brown coal resources are located in Australia, which ranks second after Germany in terms of brown coal reserves. Almost all the country’s recoverable brown coal EDR is located in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria.
