•There is increasing demand from original equipment manufacturers (OEM) for their electronics manufacturing services (EMS) providers to provide test and engineering services.
•The testing services provided by EMS providers include defect analysis, in-circuit testing (ICT), inspection with image processing, and functional testing. Testing services include automatic optical inspection (AOI), burn-in, and X-ray inspection.
•OEMs continue to decide on the cost, quality, and schedule for printed circuit boards (PCB) or modules in the contract drawn up between EMS providers and OEMs.
•Typically, OEMs supply EMS providers with the specific test equipment with which to test the PCB, which usually happens in the case of critical applications such as medical devices.
•In another form of engagement, OEMs demand the use of specific test equipment, and EMS providers deliver the services based on the specifications.
•In the third form of engagement, OEMs only provide the test specifications and rely on the manufacturing ability of the EMS providers to devise the best possible solution.
•EMS providers find high demand for their in-circuit testing services. This method allows testing of each component after it have been soldered to the PCB and enables evaluation of the entire PCB. This is where many EMS providers find opportunities.
•The advent of double-sided and multilayer boards as well as high density PCBs has led to decreased circuit node access. These introductions enable higher performance in smaller packages. As a result, as board complexity increases, OEMs are expected to continue relying on EMS partners for testing and quality assurance.
•EMS providers in high-volume market segments grow through capacity investments for testing services. Moderate-volume market segments provide the balance of operating margins and competition.
•Low-volume market segments cannot garner volume discounts from suppliers and have relatively higher fixed costs for the testing services provided.
•The testing services provided by EMS providers are dependent on the solutions required by the OEMs and the vertical they cater to.
