The Increase in Highly Motivated Attacks Drives the Market
•The advanced persistent threat (APT) solution market in the Asia-Pacific region is still at a nascent stage. As such, the market is estimated to be relatively small, with revenues hitting $xxmillion during 2013. This is despite the market buzz and hype surrounding APTs and their impact on the enterprise environment.
•The actual adoption of APT solutions remains low and this is primarily due to the low levels of awareness toward APTs across most verticals, with the exception of the government, BFSI, or service provider verticals. Moreover, the lack of a clear market definition of an APT solution is also causing confusion and wariness among organizations, resulting in a low mindshare toward the technology among them.
•Nonetheless, with APT attacks becoming more prevalent and causing greater concerns over data loss as well as reputational damages among enterprises, companies with high-value information are more inclined to purchase APT solutions to protect themselves from such threats. As a result, the market is expected to clock a significant growth spurt in the coming years. Demand is likely to come mainly from the government and BFSI verticals, while remaining limited in other verticals. Due to the infancy of the market, the APT solution market is currently dominated by FireEye Inc. (FireEye) as the vendor has introduced its solutions to the market much earlier than other competitors. Nonetheless, the market is expected to become more competitive with other vendors such as Trend Micro, Cisco (Sourcefire), Palo Alto Networks (Palo Alto), McAfee, Check Point Software Technologies (Check Point), Symantec Corporation (Symantec), Fortinet, and Lastline demonstrating growing visibility and penetration in the market.
Awareness toward advanced and targeted threats among enterprises in the region is still weak, but it has shown rapid improvement in 2013.
In Asia-Pacific, the APT solution market is currently polarized. It is mainly driven by three sub-regional markets: Japan, Australia and New Zealand (ANZ), and South Korea.
The stand-alone appliance is the primarily adopted form factor in the market, and this is expected to continue in the next couple of years before becoming an integrated feature on top of other security architecture.
Advanced persistent threat (APT) is a term that generally means a coordinated and targeted attack or vulnerability that uses sophisticated intelligence to inflict the targeted objects. In this study, the definition of an APT is refined by highlighting the following aspects:
•APT includes threats that are unable to be detected by a conventional signature- and/or reputation-based malware detection tools. An APT essentially consists of an advanced malware typically built on zero-day vulnerabilities and some form of botnets.
•The targeted nature of an APT attack often means that it will involve some form of social engineering methods before the attacker establishes a target or puts a foothold in the network. Methods used by hackers typically involve spear-phishing for entry.
•The persistent nature of an attack means that it is typically undetected and resides in the network for some period of time. Based on a specific set of objectives, the hacker can then use these undetected threats to extract content and information of the target. As such, many APTs will have the call-back feature supported by a command and control server remotely.
