After five decades of construction and development, China’s lead-acid battery industry basically has formed the combination of large-scale and small enterprises and had manufacturing system with certain scales. With the sustainable rapid growth of China’s economy, basic industries such as automobile, motorcycle, moped scooter, communication, information and electric power witness very rapid development. And the high-speed growth of these industries brought lead-acid battery industry into the sustained and vigorous growth trend, so there was an increasingly demand for lead-acid batteries. In 2013, the market scale of China’s lead-acid batteries registered CNY 150.8 billion, up 24% year-on-year.

On March 2013, the release of Suggestions for Promoting Standardized Development of Lead-acid Battery and Secondary Lead Industry represented that lead-acid battery and secondary lead industry serves as a key industry which the nation decides to weed out the backward production capacity. It decides to weed out backward production capacity that is unable to pass environmental protection examines and not confirms to entry conditions. By the end of 2013, there were 24 enterprises listed among the former two batches of lead-acid battery and secondary lead manufacturing enterprises that meet the requirements, which was published by Ministry of Environmental Protection.

Although lithium ion battery has become the hotspot in recent years, as an electrochemical power source with mature technology, lead-acid battery occupies a solid position in the overwhelming majority of traditional fields and parts of emerging application fields by virtue of high security and low price. In 2013 the yield of lead-acid batteries in China has generated 205 million Kilo Volt Ampere Hour (KVAH), an increase of 15.4% year-on-year; from 2007 to 2013, the industry compound growth rate reached 22%, apart from the output growth was declined on account of industry regulation in 2011.

Along with the change of market demand, production mode and process are perfecting constantly and manufacturing level is also improving, so battery performance also has got improved and the application fields of lead-acid batteries are becoming increasingly extensive. Besides dynamic lead storage batteries, energy storage lead batteries have a wide development space, especially the development goals for wind energy and solar energy are made in the 12th Five-Year Plan, which substantially promote the development of energy storage lead-acid battery. In the next five years to come, the annual growth rate of lead-acid battery will be around 16%.
