BACKGROUND

Originating as little more than laboratory curiosities in the 1980s, three-dimensional (3-D) scanners have emerged and expanded into a wide variety of commercial, scientific and artistic market niches. As technology improves and awareness of the capabilities of 3-D scanners becomes more widespread, their role will continue to increase. While there are competing technologies whose development can slow this growth in certain market verticals, the immense untapped potential allowed by the relatively simple digitalization of physical objects means that market growth even in those areas will be slowed, rather than stopped or reversed.

The technologies of 3-D scanning are linked by their use of an active, but noncontact, sensing process. The term “active” in this report relates to 3-D scanner projects, specifically the means by which a 3-D scanner detects the scanned object, with the specific means being either a laser beam or a pattern of light and dark areas, depending on the technique utilized. An example of the active versus passive sensor dichotomy is illustrated as follows: the difference between active and passive sonar, where the passive sonar merely listens for a target, whereas the active sonar projects a pulse whose reflection from the target is used to localize it.

Noncontact in the context of object digitalization merely implies that no part of the 3-D scanner physically touches the object, in contrast with other techniques that use a probe to build a model of the object’s surface via touching it at a number of points.

Each of the primary 3-D scanning technologies discussed in this study comprise strengths and weaknesses that suit them to various roles. Some specific applications are strongly dominated by one approach, while others show a pattern wherein one technology is partially supplanted by another that is more inherently suited to the role but demonstrates insufficient technological maturity.
