  3. > The SK Telecom tests virtualised evolved packet core to keep core network costs down

SK Telecom aims to achieve cost savings from increased scalability, better resource utilisation and the operational efficiency gained by simplified control and management of core network functions using NFV technology from deploying a commercial vEPC.
SK Telecom’s LTE subscriber base has grown rapidly since its LTE roll-out, reaching 13.5 million subscribers at the end of 2013. The increasing number of 4G devices and data traffic are causing IP, diameter and GTP signalling and data traffic overload in the network. SK Telecom chose Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) for a proof-of-concept (PoC) project to trial its virtualised evolved packet core (vEPC) solution to address its rapidly increasing signalling and data traffic challenge.

This case study provides:
an overview of the business environment and business challenge
details of the PoC, in which SK Telecom and NSN used network function virtualisation (NFV) technology to target the EPC components that are most impacted by the increasing data traffic and signalling load, namely mobility management entity (MME), serving gateway (SGW), and packet data network gateway (PGW)
the potential capex and opex savings from virtualised EPC.
