Researchers at Michigan Technological University developed a novel honeycomb like
structure of graphene, which has graphene sheets held apart by lithium carbonate.
This structural arrangement, represented as "3D graphene" is capable of replacing
expensive elements, such as platinum in a dye sensitized solar cell.

A solar cell devised by researchers at Los Alamos National Lab uses copper indium
selenide sulfide quantum dots, which, unlike conventional quantum dots containing
lead or cadmium, are inexpensive and non-toxic.

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have directed their
research initiatives toward developing solar cells from single molecule thick sheets of
graphene and materials such as molybdenum diselenide, which would enable
production of up to 1000 times more power for a given weight of material as compared
to traditional solar cells. Another research group at MIT has developed a solar cell
using graphene coated with zinc oxide nanowires, which could be expected to lead to
the development of low-cost flexible solar cells at high efficiency. The researchers
utilized aerotaxy to grow semiconducting nanowires on gold nanoparticles.

California-based Bloo Solar has developed a technology called Solar Brush, which can
accommodatexbillion solar cells or “bristles” in a square meter area. Each of these
cells have a conductive core, which converts and transfers energy efficiently to a
conductive backplane.
