The Ecuadorian Government determined a tax on special consumption (ICE) of USD0.18 per 100g sugar in every litre of drink, but just for those juice products with a sugar content greater than 25g per litre, with the exception of those with pulp fruit content greater than 50%. This was aligned to generalised preventive health aims as well as to face external factors like the strong drop in oil prices, which strongly impacted the country’s dollarised economy.
