This report brings to light the multi-carrier, multi-platform dilemma that global enterprises face when they sell turn-key connected devices to a global customer audience. In this report, we explicitly focus on the nagging problem of provisioning, tracking, monetizing and reporting on smart-enabled devices when they, for example, are manufactured in one country and used in another.

Introduction

The need for humans to talk with one another in an effective and affordable manner, often over
great distances, is what started the communications industry more than years ago. Human-to-human (H2H) connectivity is also what continues to drive the industry today, albeit with a heavy push to do everything in near real time and in a more personalized manner, especially when it comes to delivering bandwidth at a price that is acceptable to both the customer and provider.

Our world has many more connections than those represented by the billion people now with mobile voice and data access. In fact, the total number of connections today is estimated at approximately billion, growing to more than billion by 2020. We are at an age where “being connected” can mean an H2H event, or human-to-machine (H2M) event, or a machine-to-machine (M2M) event.

What is making the connected world or Internet of Things (IoT) grow to such proportions? Simply put, it is the use of technology and mobile device functionality to help nearly every major industry improve its goods and services in a manner that can provide a better experience for its customers. This applies to healthcare, telematics (automobiles and fleet management), retail services, financial services, education, publishing, insurance, supply chain, smart utilities, electronics, government services and public transportation, to name a few.
For both business customers and consumers, H2H, M2H and M2M services can mean diverse business approaches and solution offerings. Each of these service categories is growing at different rates, has unique business challenges, and requires variable levels of support to provide the right type of capability at the right time. Many of the H2H communications needs relative to the provisioning, operations, and monetization functions have been the focus of multiple Stratecast reports over the last several months, and are considered out of scope for this discussion. However, the H2M and M2M world holds an almost limitless set of possibilities for both the supplier ecosystems that create them and the customers that use them. Some now believe that 99 percent of the “things” that can be connected are not yet connected, which further boosts the business opportunity for those addressing the IoT marketplace.

The report further explains how Device Cloud Networks—an M2M solution supplier under the same ownership as IMC Iceland, a licensed GSM mobile operator based in Reykjavik, Iceland—along with its device management partner, Cycle30, provide a simplified means for addressing the multi-carrier, multi-platform, M2M management challenge.
