will continue to do so in the future. It involves both monitoring and controlling functions
wirelessly. Applications of wireless network technology range from building smart homes and
in environmental monitoring and disaster management to healthcare and industrial automation.
The advances in the vast and rapidly developing field of wireless sensor networks
(WSNs) is an ongoing process.

Competitive Analysis
With increasing two way wireless communication in the industrial space, wireless sensor
networks have attained high level of importance especially in monitoring applications in the
industrial process and discrete sectors. A number of protocol developers operate in this
market with a fair amount of competition existing among various protocols. With limited
number of protocols developed so far, the intensity of competition is low. There is an effort
to enforce interoperability of protocols which is expected to facilitate growth in adoption of
wireless sensor networks.

Increasingly most parameters are sensed wirelessly especially in industrial plants that are
spread over large physical areas. Some of the key parameter (pressure, temperature, and
flow) sensing are more of a dynamic measurement, therefore, the sensing instrument as well
as the protocols have to be extremely precise in detecting and interpreting the right signal.
Developers of wireless sensor networks have been improving them from time to time. Industrial
giants such as Honeywell and Emerson have developed their own wireless sensor
networks.
