An Overview of a Key Petrochemical Feedstock for a Region of Growing Prominence
The study provides market information for one of the largest petrochemical regions, the GCC, which is important for understanding the global market from a strategic perspective. The study enlists key manufacturers and production capacities for phenol in the GCC, along with a brief market overview and projected capacity expansions. Trade statistics for 2012 and price trend from 2008 to 2012 have been provided with a detailed analysis. The study includes a brief commentary on the major applications globally, key insights, and growth prospects for phenol.
GCC—Phenol Production Capacity
- Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Company in the KSA, with an installed phenol capacity of MMTA, is
currently the sole producer of phenol in the GCC. The entire phenol production from this plant is captive
for the production of its derivative, bisphenol-A (BPA), at the site.
- Cumene, which is produced from benzene and propylene, is the primary raw material for phenol, while
acetone is the co-product from the process. The largest end-use application for phenol is the production
of BPA, which is a precursor for polycarbonate resins. Cumene, Phenol, and BPA production was started
in the GCC during 2010–2011.
