Baby Food Belgium examines the trends in the baby food market for 2006-2012, with forecasts to 2018. It examines how live birth rates, breastfeeding trends, the economic crisis, new product and packaging developments, changing attitudes and safety concerns have affected the market for baby milks, cereals, meals, drinks and finger foods.
The market amounted to 11,377 tonnes in 2012, worth €109.5 million (US$ 141.3 million). Demand for baby food in Belgium has been declining in volume terms since 2008, while sales in value have remained more or less stable. With the exception of baby milks, all sectors have experienced a downturn over the past two years, resulting in a drop in market value of around 1% in 2012 and a fall in volume sales of 3.6%. Although the poor economic climate is partly to blame for this poor performance, a decline in the number of births in 2011 and a further expected fall in 2012 have exacerbated the situation.
