Key Findings

The German baby food market has been struggling in the face of the declining number of births, concern over babies' health and economic difficulties. The combined result of these pressures has meant that sales have declined in both volume and real terms value over the last year and also over whole period from 2006 to 2012.

In 2012, retail sales stood at €636 million (US$ 820.4 million), 1.4% lower than in 2011, equivalent to a 3.4% drop in real terms. Volume sales fell by 1.7% in 2012 and by 4.7% over the period since 2006. In terms of volume sales, all sectors ended 2012 at lower levels than those achieved in 2006, while in value terms baby milks has been the only sector to experience growth, largely as a result of an increase in unit prices. Prices of all other product groups have fallen, as retailers, especially drugmarkets, have competed fiercely for market share by dropping prices.

Against this gloomy background, a few segments continue to show growth. The most promising of these is products for older babies, from one to three years' old, including new products types such as the recently introduced squeezy pouches.
