Baby Food Philippines examines the trends in the baby food market for 2006-2012, with forecasts to 2018. It examines how live birth rates, breastfeeding trends, the economic crisis, new product and packaging developments, changing attitudes and safety concerns have affected the market for baby milks, cereals, meals, drinks and finger foods.
Between 2006 and 2012, the baby food market grew by 11.1% in volume terms and by 45.3% in value. Higher growth has been held back by the increasing practice of breastfeeding, particularly of very young babies, as well as by continuing, though declining, levels of poverty. The key feature of the market is the continuing dominance of baby milks, which accounted for 84.9% of a total market valued at Pesos 49.63 billion in 2012.
The market has become more concentrated in recent years, with Nestlé ? particularly after its acquisition of Wyeth in 2012 - consolidating its hold on sales. The leading two manufacturers, Nestlé (including Wyeth) and Mead Johnson, accounted for three-quarters of value sales in 2012. Nestlé is now the only manufacturer of any significance in cereals, dry meals, wet meals and drinks and, now that it owns Wyeth, also dominates milks.
