Company summary

-Tektronix Communications (Tektronix), part of the communications platform within parent company Danaher, is the leading supplier of service assurance products and services to the telecoms industry. Tektronix had a market share of 15% in the USD2.93 billion service assurance market in 2013, and revenue of USD445 million.
-The company has a significant presence in the Tier-1 CSP market, predominantly among mobile operators. Analysys Mason ranks Tektronix as the number-one supplier in the probe systems market by market share.
-The GeoProbe solution, its flagship product, is a real-time, distributed passive probe system, providing network assurance capabilities for network operations, including proactive monitoring, diagnosis, troubleshooting and analysis by protocol of network and service problems.
-Its probe portfolio focuses on critical performance and management issues in LTE, VoIP, IMS and converged/IP networks, which are rapidly scaling up to meet demand.
-In December 2013, Tektronix acquired Newfield Wireless,1 a provider of mobile network optimisation solutions with geo-analytics capabilities (TrueCall), to strengthen its customer experience management (CEM) offering with real-time geolocation information.

Company summary: financials

- Tektronix is the largest vendor in service assurance space, accounting for 15% of the market in 2013. It is the leading provider in the probe systems and service management subsegments, which are the fastest growing sub-segments of the service assurance market.
- The company’s probe systems revenue grew by 8% from USD357 million in 2012 to USD386 million in 2013.
- Tektronix’s growth in the probe systems segment reflects its strength and the success of its GeoProbe solution in the mobile segment, particularly LTE data services, in which demand remains significantly high in developed markets because of increasing data traffic volumes. 90% of its revenue comes from mobile deployment, reflecting its
strength in this sector.
- Its service management business achieved high organic growth in 2013, from USD35 million in 2012 to
USD60 million, because of increased demand in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) for its solutions including GeoProbe, G10, Touchpoint and the Iris suite.
- Tektronix’s presence continues to grow in North America (NA) and some parts of EMEA, which constitute 63% and 28% of its revenue, respectively. It also pursues opportunities in APAC and LATAM, which collectively make up 9% of its revenue.

Strategic direction
- Tektronix positions itself as a provider of service assurance and intelligence solutions to CSPs by placing its probe systems at the core of its offerings to deliver an end-to-end network view from RAN to the IMS.
- It differentiates itself with an ‘operate-retain-upsell’ strategy, which focuses on helping CSPs to use rich network data across various departments spanning network operations, customer care and marketing, to deliver high-quality customer experience, reduce churn and upsell services.
- It has made two strategic acquisitions – Arantech in 2009 and Newfield Wireless in 2013 – to take advantage of CSPs’ increased focus on CEM, which is leading CSPs to invest in service assurance, service management and probe systems.
- The acquisitions enabled Tektronix to provide CEM solutions that are enriched with real-time geolocation information. It also obtained radio frequency (RF), LTE and VoLTE
optimisation services and expertise through Newfield Wireless’s portfolio.
- It is focusing on expanding the application of its technology to major growth areas such as LTE deployments, network function virtualisation (NFV), converged IP and IMS
networks. It is also investing in big data solutions to enable CSPs to generate new revenue sources, and places strong emphasis on VoLTE assurance.
