Movistar is expanding FTTH coverage rapidly in Spain, and FTTH net additions dominate
- Movistar’s FTTH roll-out, which aims to reach 50% of homes and businesses in Spain by 2015, is more extensive than that of many of its peers in Western Europe because:
- roll-out costs are relatively low, at about EUR200 per home passed in dense urban areas, thanks to the availability of usable duct infrastructure
- Movistar has fewer regulatory obligations: it is obliged to offer bitstream access only to speeds of up to 30Mbps
- Movistar shares vertical infrastructure to reduce costs: it has an agreement with Jazztel whereby each party rolls out vertical infrastructure to 1.5 million homes and then grants the other party access. Negotiations are ongoing to increase the figure to 2.225 million homes.
- Movistar aimed to have passed 3.5 million homes with FTTH by the end of 2013, an increase from 3 million at the end of September 2013. The FTTH subscriber base of 561 000 at the end of 2013 meant that an impressive take-up rate of approximately 20% had already been achieved.
- The increased coverage meant FTTH accounted for 9.8% of Movistar’s fixed broadband base at the end of 2013. However, the FTTH roll-out has not slowed the market share
declines that Movistar continues to experience, as Jazztel and Orange’s low-cost offers have attracted customers.
