Fine china: Intensifying import competition will continue to constrain industry growth
Ceramics Manufacturing in the US
Historically, the Ceramics Manufacturing industry has suffered from declining sales as a result of rising import penetration, which placed downward pressure on prices.
However, during the previous five-year period, industry revenue turned around. Revenue rose over the past five years because of rising per capita disposable income and increased activity in the residential and nonresident construction markets. These increases spurred demand for kitchenware, plumbing fixtures and other ceramic products.
Additionally, strong demand for advanced ceramics helped bolster exports and contribute to increasing industry revenue.
Over the next five years, imports as a percentage of domestic demand are expected to increase while exports as a percentage of revenue are estimated to decline. Subsequently, industry revenue is expected to decrease slightly.
