Background to this report

The Chinese car market experienced one of the most accelerated expansions ever recorded in the history of the automotive industry, having achieved a six-fold growth over the last decade. In 2002, about 3.3 million cars and light commercial vehicles were sold in China, while in 2012 this figure rose to about 19 million units. Much of this growth is concentrated in the two-year period from 2009 to 2010; two stellar years for the market, as it effectively doubled from levels of eight million in 2008 to over 17 million in 2011 driven by various stimuli. China has emerged as the world’s largest car market as a result of this tumultuous two years of new record sales, surpassing the US market, which at the time had just undergone one of the major setbacks in its history.
