BMI View: Angola's life insurance industry is small even by sub-Saharan African standards, though somelines, including motor and health and personal accident insurance, are better developed than others. Lowincome levels and widespread poverty have constrained the growth of the life insurance market, whereunderwriting volumes remain negligible. A lack of private enterprise has also restrained the widerdevelopment of the market, with state-owned provider ENSA dominant in both the life and non-life segmentwhile the government continues to place limits on foreign participation. Nevertheless, despite falling oilprices we retain a positive outlook for the insurance sector as a whole, with premiums set to expand at asteady pace in the better developed markets. While we don't expect the competitive landscape to changegreatly in the medium term, multinationals will be looking increasingly to the market as new opportunitiespresent themselves.

Key Updates & Forecasts

- In March 2016, the government announced the disbandment of financial services firm AAA Seguros, which had been the insurance arm of state-owned energy company, Sonangol. The dissolution hadexpected to coincide with the oil and gas insurance sector being opened up to private insurers; however, itwas announced instead that state-onwed provider, ENSA, would be responsible for underwriting theindustry.

- In April 2016 ENSA announced the signing of a bancassurance agreement with the Economic Bank (BE).The partnership allows ENSA's customers to make direct debit payments for insurance premiums throughtheir BE bank account.
