Opportunities will Emerge in Deep Sea E&P, Gas, and East Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa’s oil and gas industry is growing rapidly, producing significant opportunities for automation and control solution (ACS) suppliers. An expansion of ACS revenue will be driven by investments in industry-supporting infrastructure, an increasing focus on improving industry efficiencies, and rising exploration and production (E&P), with the East African landscape providing key potential opportunities. This research service outlines the existing and projected market for ACS within the oil and gas industry between 2012 and 2019, focusing specifically on Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda. This includes an analysis of the primary drivers and restraints of the market and the anticipated evolution of the market.

Key Findings
-This research service provides an exploratory analysis of the automation and control solutions (ACS) market within Sub-Saharan Africa’s (SSA) oil and gas industry from 2009 to 2019.
-Three SSA countries—Nigeria, Uganda, and Kenya—were selected for this exploratory study based on the growing oil and gas industry in these countries.
-Nigeria was chosen as a representation of a mature oil and gas industry in SSA, while Uganda and Kenya were chosen due to their oil and gas industry growth potential.
-In terms of revenue, the total ACS market within the oil and gas industries of these SSA countries amounted to $million in 2012.
-Distributed control systems (DCS) accounted for the bulk ( %) of SSA’s ACS market revenue in 2012, being the preferred ACS technology within the oil and gas industry. Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and safety instrumented solutions (SIS) solutions have also captured large portions of demand.
-Conventional DCS solutions have historically attracted the majority of market revenues due to the conservative nature of oil and gas industry participants. Companies demonstrate a reluctance to implement new, advanced ACS systems.
-DCS solutions are consequently expected to continue to account for the majority of product purchase types during the forecast period. However, demand for advanced SCADA and SIS solutions are anticipated to grow more rapidly than demand for DCS.
-Demand for ACS products is directly linked to the sector’s capital expenditure on expansion and upgrade projects in upstream, midstream, and downstream operations.
-Limited refinery projects are anticipated in the short term. However, such projects should materialise in the long term as the region seeks to bridge the gap between crude oil production and refining activities, particularly leading to a rise in DCS and manufacturing execution systems (MES) spend.
-In the medium term, expenditure on ACS technologies will come as a result of investment in exploration and production (E&P), and pipeline and storage terminal infrastructure.
-Other key drivers of the ACS market will include increased interest in unconventional fossil fuel resources and an industry focus on improving operational efficiency. Inefficient policy framework and decision making could, however, limit growth potential.
-As a result, the ACS market within Sub-Saharan Africa’s oil and gas industry is anticipated to be valued at $ million by 2019.
