An End User Perspective

The main research objective is to measure the current use and future decision making behaviour toward information technology (IT) within the manufacturing sector. Overall, companies from the manufacturing industry are avid users of many enterprise and communications technologies. They are the top users of consumer and business grade softphones, unified communications, mobile device management, machine-to-machine, and TDM phones out of the 5 key industries surveyed. As far as budget allocation is concerned, the greatest proportion of manufacturing companies’ budgets is allocated to network security and customer care, because cyber-espionage and attracting and retaining customers are their greatest concerns.

Research Objectives
The overall research objective is to measure the current use and future decision making behavior toward information technology (IT) within the manufacturing sector, specifically: smart phones, tablets, mobile apps, cloud computing, video, audio, and web conferencing, Internet Protocol (IP) telephony, enterprise and consumer social media, unified communications client (UCC), time-division multiplexing (TDM) phones, business grade and consumer softphones, customer relationship management (CRM), headsets, machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, and mobile device management (MDM).

-The highest percent allocation of its IT budget goes to network security; its greatest concern is cyber-espionage.
-The next highest priority with regard to the industry’s IT budget is customer care. We found that attracting and retaining customers and improving productivity are the top 2 concerns for manufacturers. They are using IT to tackle these challenges.
-This industry is also investing in mobile devices, with the third highest percent of the IT budget allocated to this technology.
-The utmost concern in the manufacturing industry is the cost and challenge of managing multi-vendor solutions. Also top of mind is the cost of supporting new business needs. The majority of respondents have provided employees with company-issued mobile devices including smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
-The manufacturing industry is planning to address one of its greatest issues, which is the challenge and cost of managing multi-vendor solutions, by investing in tightly integrated multi-vendor solutions or end-to-end solutions.
-Mobile email is the number one mobile application deployed. Much growth is expected in all of the mobile applications over the next three years.
-The impact of 4G on this industry is much greater in this industry than the other verticals in this survey—most respondents state they are more likely to deploy mobile applications with a 4G network.
