BMI View: Despite offering significant growth potential, the outlook for Botswana's fledgling tourismindustry has taken a turn for the worse this quarter. The country is heavily reliant upon nearby andneighbouring states to boost international visitor figures and declining private consumption in South Africaas well as ongoing political instability in Zimbabwe will undermine growth over the coming months andyears. Heightened economic uncertainty in Europe will also dampen growth, particularly from marketssuch as the UK and Germany. The outlook is not entirely negative, however, with Botswana successfullybuilding on marketing campaigns to highlight its attractions as a safari and ecotourism destination amongvisitors from Asia Pacific markets such as Australia and from the United States. The market will alsoremain attractive to investors in light of Botswana's well established regulatory environment and open, stable and transparent financial market.

Key Updates And Forecasts

- A downturn in travel from South Africa and Zimbabwe will drag down the overall inbound tourismfigure in 2016, with total international arrivals to Botswana now forecast to decrease by 2.7% to reachjust under 2mn. This demonstrates the importance of lessening the reliance on regional travel anddiversifying source markets in order to ensure the future sustainability of the market.

- Overall the country remains an attractive investment destination and we are seeing more regional andglobal hotel groups enter the competitive landscape. Protea Hotels announced plans in June 2016 todevelop its first hotel in Botswana - the new property is expected to open in Gaborone in 2018. Protea ispart of Marriott International, which reportedly plans to open 93 hotels in the Middle East and Africa by2025.

- Botswana has come under some criticism from human rights groups relating to the government'streatment of the indigenous Bushman population. Various celebrities, led by charity SurvivalInternational have called for a tourism boycott of the country in a new campaign launched in June 2016.
