France's tourism industry has suffered a short-term setback in the wake of the Paris and Nice terrorist attacks. Government figures show around a 7% decline in inbound visitors over the first half of 2016, with occupancy rates down, particularly in Paris and the surrounding region. Nonetheless, France remains one of the largest and most popular tourism destinations in Europe and globally. The strength and maturity of the market, combined with government efforts to reassure potential visitors, should see arrivals bounce back swiftly.

Key Updates And Forecasts

- The head of the Paris region tourism board reported that over the first six months of 2016 travel to the Ile-de-France region (including Paris) was down by 6.4%, an impact which will cost an estimated EUR750mn. Hotel stays are reportedly down by 11.4% and major attractions have seen significant declines in visitor numbers.
