We forecast significant expansion in the tourism sector of Mauritius. This expansion will be driven by strong increases in arrivals, which in turn will be a result of strong governmental promotion of the island as a travel destination. Improved links continue to be made with key source markets, in terms of increased air travel and information sharing, indicating that Mauritius has ambitious plans to improve its tourism sector. The hotel and accommodation industry will also see growth, especially from the beginning of 2017 when the current ban on new hotels is lifted. This, coupled with ever-increasing tourist numbers, will see a surge in hotel and restaurant industry value after a disappointing 2016.

Key Updates And Forecasts


- In August 2016, the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) announced that it was working closely with a number of airlines to increase the number of tourists arriving from mainland Africa. Recent talks included the possible creation of new air links between certain destinations as well as an increase in the amount of promotion airlines give to the island as a destination. One notable party included in the talks is South African Airways, one of the largest carriers in Africa.
