  4. > The UK Public Sector Market for Data Center Facilities and Services

Spending cuts, the political requirement to reduce carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency, and the need to provide an increasing number of services digitally are driving UK public-sector organizations across the spectrum to evaluate their data center infrastructure.
- Despite some progress, a lot of consolidation of old, inefficient and underused data centers in the UK public sector can still be done.
-Public-sector organizations are using a variety of methods with which to consolidate, including retaining owned facilities and moving to a managed services model, though there is little evidence of significant or growing demand for basic colocation services, except as a backup service.
- There is growing appetite among public-sector organizations to share services in order to mutually benefit from owned facilities.
- As security concerns are addressed and more applications become cloud-ready, take-up of cloud-based services is rising as a means of lowering
costs and improving efficiencies, helped by the UK Government’s G-Cloud procurement framework.
- There are considerable opportunities for vendors, operators and cloud-service providers as the UK public sector further consolidates the number of data
centers in use.
