BMI View: While New Zealand will remain a net importer of crude oil to offset falling production, slowingdemand will see it turn into a small net exporter of refined fuels, namely jet fuel and residual fuel oil, by2020. The lack of any means to import gas remains a lingering concern as the country's gas outputcontinues to decline.

Latest Updates And Key Forecasts

- Falling oil production will see New Zealand become increasingly dependent on crude oil imports, benefiting suppliers in the Middle East as well as Russia and Malaysia.

- New Zealand will continue to export small quantities of jet fuel and residual fuel oil, while continuing torequire gasoline, diesel and LPG imports.

- The government's plans to create a renewables-oriented energy mix pose a downside risk to oil-based fuelconsumption in the transportation, industrial and power sectors.

- New Zealand's lack of an LNG import or export infrastructure means that its gas consumption remainscapped by domestic gas production. The country's small domestic market and largely stagnantconsumption growth outlook renders expensive LNG terminal projects infeasible.
