BMI View: Spain has long been one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe, attracting a largenumber of visitors from throughout the region and from markets further afield. Supporting infrastructure isvery well developed, including an extensive hotel market which caters to travellers of all budget levels anda transport network which provides a high level of domestic and international connectivity. As a maturemarket, we expect to see relatively slow growth in international arrivals to Spain over the coming years. Wealso note the potential impact of the UK's vote to exit the European Union (EU) which could both dampenarrivals from the UK and affect travel throughout the EU in light of the resultant economic uncertainty.

Key Updates And Forecasts

- From 1 July 2016 the Balearic Islands (including popular islands Ibiza, Menorca and Majorca) areinstituting a tourism tax, payable per person and ranging from EUR0.5 to EUR2 dependent upon thehotel, season and length of stay. The tax will be funnelled towards protecting natural resources andpromoting sustainable tourism.

- A number of high profile terrorist attacks in Europe, including most recently in Nice, France, has thepotential to derail tourism growth throughout the region as visitors from further afield are deterred by theperceived risk. In the wake of the Nice attack Spain's Interior Minister reported that Spain would beincreasing security at airports, popular tourist destinations and the border with France.

- Spain's tourism infrastructure is already very well developed and the country has extensive regional andglobal air travel connections. The availability of flights continues to improve, with budget airlines such asRyanair and EasyJet both launching new flights to various Spanish destinations over the summerholiday season.

- The inbound tourism market has shown healthy growth over the first half of 2016 and we have made aslight upwards revision to our forecasts for growth in international arrivals. The inbound market is nowexpected to grow by 2.8% to reach over 68.9mn.
