Tunisia's food and drink industry will experience robust growth in sales throughout our forecast period to 2020, although a significant portion of growth will be driven by inflationary pressures. Weak consumer confidence and concerns over the country's stability will continue to hamper foreign investment.

Key Trends & Industry Developments

- Our consumer outlook for Tunisia has deteriorated in recent quarters, on the back of lower consumer confidence and concerns over the country's political stability.

- Nonetheless, we still expect food and drink sales to grow at a robust pace over the next five years, although we caution that a significant part of this growth is due to inflationary pressures. Rising incomes and the ongoing formalisation of the food retail sector will drive sales growth.

- Despite Tunisia's majority Muslim population, consumption of alcoholic drinks is relatively developed, with beer the most consumed category by some distance. Nonetheless, hikes in excise taxes on wine and beer will hamper the development of the sector.

- Tunisia's mass grocery retail sector - which currently accounts for less than 20% of total food sales - will benefit from rising incomes, increasing households' access to packaged food, and from strong investment in the sector. The opening of the first Auchan hypermarket, planned for the end of 2016, will boost sector dynamism.
