Holiday Purchasing Patterns Market Assessment 2014

Executive Summary

Over the past 5 years several factors have led to a decline in both the UK and overseas holiday market, with the number of trips taken by domestic vacationers dropping by 0.9% overall, despite increasing in 2010, 2012 and 2013. This suggests that consumers have remained reticent regarding spending on holidays, with household budgets continuing to remain tight and consumer confidence only just beginning to return over the past year. In contrast, the value of both the overseas and domestic holiday markets increased between 2009 and 2013, rising by an estimated 8.3% and 14.5%, respectively. These value growths, however, are likely to be down to price rises across the sector, with air passenger duty (APD) and fuel costs serving to increase the value of holidays in recent years. In addition, the continued trend towards staycationing has fuelled demand for more luxury and premium-end accommodation and holiday options at home, with new formats, such as ‘poshtels’ — that is posh hostels — springing up across city centres throughout the UK, thus driving up prices in certain areas of the market.
