In recent years, the global market for transformers, largely driven by the Asia-Pacific region, has grown at a significant rate that is in pace with the electricity transmission and distribution industry. The global economic downturn affected many end-user industries of transformers such as manufacturing and construction, which, in turn, had a considerable influence on the transformer market. In addition, advancements in transformer technologies have resulted in the reduction of global carbon emissions and decreased electricity loss during transmission.

The development and installation of energy-efficient transformers has reduced overall equipment operating costs and decreased transformer failures. The market for transformers can be broadly divided into three categories based on industrial applications: power transformers, distribution transformers and traction transformers. Power transformers are used in power grids and the power plants where electricity is generated.

Distribution transformers are used mainly in residential and commercial building applications to transmit and distribute electricity. Traction transformers are used mainly in electric multiple units (EMUs), locomotives, high-speed trains, trams and other electrical vehicles due to their high performance. Transformers are used to transmit electricity, increase or decrease the voltage supply to the desired level at the receiver (end-user) end, and reduce power losses during transmission to the end point.

Transformers also electrically separate end users from contact with the voltage supply. Globally, demand for transformers is being driven by increasing demand for electricity, replacement of existing transformers, increased applications for transformers in end-user industries and global economic recovery. In addition, favorable legislation and regulations focused on the reduction of CO2 emissions and energy efficiency are contributing to growth of the transformer market. In the long term, the integrated electric equipment market, which includes smart meters, is expected to drive the market for transformers, with increasing demand for renewable energy production and infrastructure development in developing regions.

The global market for electrical transformers is growing due to high demand for electric transmission and distribution equipment and networks resulting from the revival of the global economy and increasing construction and infrastructure activities.

Growth is being primarily driven by the North American and Asia-Pacific regions.
