  4. > Overview of the Plastics Market in Sub-Saharan Africa : Plastic Consumption to Witness Higher Uptake

Key Findings

•South Africa and Nigeria are the largest consumers of plastics in sub-Saharan Africa. They are the only two countries in the region to locally produce polymers.
•South Africa’s per capita consumption of plastics was kg in 2013. It uses plastics for a wide variety of applications and is more technologically advanced than other countries in the region.
•Meanwhile, Nigeria has the best consumer demographics in sub-Saharan Africa, as its population and GDP growth are the highest in the region. The Nigerian plastics market witnessed a xx% growth in 2013 over 2012. This is likely to attract greater investments in the country, as the potential for increased use of plastics in the consumer sector is high.
•Ghana is less favourable in terms of consumer demographics, as its population is small. Moreover, its import tariffs on raw materials are higher than those of its neighbouring countries. However, Ghana is one of the most politically stable nations in sub-Saharan Africa and has a favourable business environment.
•Although growth in the Kenyan plastics market is high, the consumer demographics are not as favourable as in West Africa. However, rapid economic expansion plans as well as increased exports to its neighbouring countries make Kenya a good supply hub in East Africa.
•Ethiopia has a large population, yet only xx% of it is urbanised and most of the shopping is informal. Its per capita consumption of plastics was a merexx kg in 2013. Government investments and efforts to grow the local economy will lead to an increase in plastics consumption over the long term of the forecast period.

•South Africa has a diverse economy and a well-established manufacturing sector, which contributes xx% to the country’s GDP and is expected to grow at a rate of between % and % during 2014'2019.
•The plastics market in South Africa accounts for xx% of the manufacturing sector and is at a mature stage. All activities—ranging from polymer production to using plastic components or intermediates in assembling finished products such as electronics—are carried out locally through the value chain.
•South Africa’ s plastic consumption was kg per capita in 2013. This includes all recycled plastics, which are witnessing a rapid uptake.
•The largest application area for plastics is the packaging sector, which was valued at nearly $xxmillion with a share of more than xx% of the South African plastics market in 2013. Other application areas include the automotive, medical, electrical, and construction sectors.
•The South African plastics market is led by six large companies with a combined market share of between xx% and xx% in 2013. The remaining market is highly fragmented and comprises close to xx converters.
•South Africa has a few local polymer producers, namely, Sasol, Safripol, and Hosaf. These companies produce polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
•Some polymers are not locally produced. Many distributors import such products and supply to converters, or converters directly import the polymers when their volume requirements are higher.
•Products that are imported and not locally produced are polystyrene, polyamides, acrylonitrile, butadiene styrene, and polyurethane systems.

Growth Trends

•Innovation in packaging design sets the great converters apart from the rest and attracts the bigger companies and multinationals (MNCs) due to their technical skills and advanced technology.
•Increased consumer awareness of brands and a larger variety of products on the shelves prompt companies to set their products apart from their competitors.
•Although consumers do not purchase a product for its packaging, it does assist in decision making. This is especially true in the home & personal care products sector.
•Going green is the new global trend for chemicals and materials in all applications. One of the ways to achieve this is by recycling plastics and using them, together with virgin plastics, to create more plastic products, thereby reducing the converters’ carbon footprint.
•The trend in plastics in the food packaging sector is for thinner but stronger light-weight plastics.
•Thinner and lighter packaging reduces the amount of polymers used, thereby reducing the cost of packaging in the most price-sensitive market application area.
•Stronger packaging reduces the amount of food that is wasted during transportation or general handling. This, therefore, reduces the hunger resulting from food loss due to damage or reduced shelf life.
