Botswana has the natural resources and beauty to be one of the best safari tourist destinations in Southern Africa, but its tourism industry does not currently have adequate infrastructure and investment to realise this potential. The industry is also heavily reliant on regional tourism, and vulnerable to regional political and economic stability. Investment into transport infrastructure and increasing employment in the sector will be the key growth drivers in 2016 and throughout the forecast period. Furthermore, developing transport connections will facilitate an expansion in potential source markets. We expect to see Botswana re-emerge as a key competitor within the Southern African tourism market.

Key Updates and Forecasts


- In light of the increase in international air passenger traffic in the second quarter of 2016, as well as the commencement of Ethiopian Airlines flight links to Botswana that commenced in October 2016, we have revised our forecasts to reflect an increase in the number of tourist arriving into the country to just under 1.9mn, up 3.5% on 2015.

- The Botswana Tourism Organisation has proposed the introduction of a new tourism development levy for travellers from outside the South African Development Community area in order to fund the development of tourism in the country, which would come into effect in 2017.
