Overview

This market study addresses hot, new and exciting developments in the wireless industry, including wireless personal area networks (WPANs), wireless local area networks (WLANs), and wireless metropolitan area networks (WLANs). It addresses key topics within each of these three domains that have a major impact on wireless technology and wireless users.

This market study also contains illustrations to clarify and enhance explanations of complex features and functionality and multiple tables to provide performance data and additional information.

Paramount to this study is an exposition on the two new high-performance IEEE broad-band Wi-Fi standards for WLANs: IEEE 802.11ac and 802.11ad (known as WiGig). Referred to as 5G technology, the standards offer gigabit performance on WLANs- a giant step upward from the previous WLAN IEEE standard- 802.11n. Addressed and explained in detail are the powerful new standard features and functionality of these latest two standards. For 802.11ac these powerful features include expanded channel bonding, multi-user MIMO, and beamforming for 802.11ac.

The study also presents key features and functionality for 802.11ad, including tri-band functionality featuring Fast Session Transfer, beamforming and audio/visual features for 60 GHz 802.11ad (WiGig). It also addresses applications served by 802.11ad including video streaming, rapid file transfer, wireless docking, and wireless backhaul. And it provides a market analysis based on applications and also on enabled various types of 802.11 devices. Included in the analysis is 802.11ad's adoption factors and a roadmap.

Further, the study also addresses a growing number of “second-wave” IEEE 802.11ac products from prominent industry vendors and chip producers with product details and pricing. For 802.11ad the study addresses vendor products that target 802.11ad 60 GHz applications.

A table lists the prominent WLAN chip and product vendors and their products.

In addition to WLANs, the study addresses the major standards organizations, their standards for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) and applications. These standards organizations include the IEEE, Bluetooth, the Zigbee Alliance, WiGig and Wimedia in addition to standards organizations for wireless metropolitan area networks (WMANs).

This market study also discusses the next step in the evolution of WLANs. The High Efficiency WLAN Study Group (HEW SG) within the IEEE 802.11Working Group is involved in developing the next WLAN standard that will improve the efficiency and performance of WLANs.

The major U.S wireless carriers have been scrambling to expand their networks and network capacity for the latest in broadband technology - 4G LTE service - to accommodate demands for more bandwidth from a vast number of users as traffic from smartphones, tablets and computers continues to skyrocket. The Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (WMAN) section of this market study covers AT&T Wireless, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile-U S and their activities.

Because “Hotspots” are big revenue producers for companies, this study also focuses on this skyrocketing industry segment. It addresses a new wireless specification, Hotspot 2.0 which simplifies connection and uses the IEEE 802.11u standard to interface with carrier WANs. It also addresses a number of hotspot vendor innovations.

Cloud computing, virtual networks and unified communication are evolving wireless industry trends supported by network vendors and adopted by a growing number of businesses from small to large corporations to substantially improve operating efficiency and to drive down operating and communications costs.

Because of their growing significance in user networks, this study addresses these trends.

Cloud computing is an extremely hot topic throughout the industry. It is now supported by prominent network industry vendors and is being implemented by businesses and corporations to eliminate software and hardware purchases and maintenance costs through cloud computer service providers. Cloud computing also comes with problems that must be addressed by implementers. The concept has sparked new life in the network vendor industry, which has geared up to support cloud computing through new products and services.
