BMI View:
Most of the region should experience robust growth in car sales in 2016, 2017 and beyond, thanks to rising remittances from the US and strengthening private consumption at home, with Costa Rica set to perform particularly strongly, although rising gang related crime will exert a drag on some economies in the region, especially El Salvador, where vehicle sales are on course to fall in 2016 and 2017.

Key Views

- Slowdowns in fixed investment and construction activity will continue to negatively impact the commercial vehicle segment.

- Increased remittance flows from US and improved manufacturing exports will support consumer spending and translate to growth in the passenger car segment.

- Rising violence and corruption will weigh on consumer and business sentiment and provide headwinds to vehicle sales.
