BMI View:

Zambia's tourism industry has many natural resources, such as Victoria Falls, which havehelped to provide the country with a strong 2015. 2016 is expected to be even stronger as the industrybecomes more cohesive in attracting investment and improving marketing strategies. Over the forecastperiod there will be a strong increase in the number of visitors coming into the country, particularly fromneighbouring countries. The reintroduction of a national airline is likely to boost connectivity from 2016onwards. While the hotel network is underdeveloped, there are opportunities to expand this, as demand isexpected to outstrip supply, leading to an increase in occupancy rates. Business hotels in particular arelikely to be in demand.Key Updates And Forecasts

- The depreciation of the Zambian kwacha over 2015 (driven by falling copper prices and a strong dollar)could deter inward investment, but there does not appear to be an issue as of yet. Indeed, the fallingcopper price could inspire the government to invest even more in the tourism industry in order todiversify the economy and attract even more valuable foreign exchange reserves.

- While the economic slowdown in China could potentially deter investment in the future, a Chinesedelegation visiting Lusaka in November 2015 promised an additional USD1bn investment into thecountry, which is likely to arrest fears for now. Such investment in boosting transport infrastructure willbenefit the tourism industry in the country to a great extent.
