Key Findings

Europe will continue to be the leader in innovative automotive technologies benefitting from the first mover advantage, closely followed by North America and Japan. BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) then follow.
Ford, along with German OEMS, will be the front-runners in adopting electric power steering (EPS) technologies. These OEMs have dedicated EPS strategies until 2021 and harbor thoughts of offering an all-EPS portfolio.
While the Audi Q7 and the Ford F-150 share a similar front axle load, their EPS strategy varies. The Audi Q7 uses a concentric rack EPS, while the Ford F-150 uses a belt drive that crosses the xx kN barrier. However, both use a xxV system.
Further potential for loss-of-assist mitigation lies across all segments. While ultra low-cost column electric power steering (CEPS) will target the A/B vehicle segments and to an extent the C-segment, potential for heavy-duty EPS lies in the SUV, pickup, and MPV segments. Advanced EPS functions might find potential in the E/F-class segments, trickling down to other segments.
UNECE R79 is expected to update its amendment allowing OEMs to exercise steering automation across different situations and at higher speeds. While steer-by-wire (SbW) offers the future of steering, it still requires a fail-safe or fail-operational mode.
