Italy has a very well-established tourism industry. For many years it has been a popular destination for travellers of all types due to its array of attractions including great beaches, historical landmarks and culture-rich cities. We forecast that the sector will see strong growth up to 2020, with tourism arrivals increasing significantly throughout the period. This rise, driven by a relatively weak euro and improving economies in many key source markets, will in turn lead to an increase in total tourism receipts. Although the growing numbers of arrivals will drive higher demand for accommodation, we do not forecast anywhere near as much growth in the hotel sector. Due to its long history as a well-known destination, Italy has a well-developed hotel and restaurant industry which is coming close to being completely saturated. Domestic and international chains with strong presences already vie with a high number of independent establishments for customers and for this reason we do not expect many opportunities for development within the accommodation sector.

Key Updates and Forecasts


- The forecast for arrival numbers has been reduced slightly this quarter largely due to a slightly more disappointing 2016 than expected. It is estimated that just under 84mn tourists arrived over the year, lower than previously thought. Although the rate of growth will be similar to our last forecast, this will have a knock-on effect and arrivals for the remaining forecast period will remain lower, hitting 95.6mn by 2020.

- In September 2016, Marriott completed its acquisition of Starwood, making it the largest hotel chain in the world. The company's presence in Italy now stands at over 50 properties.
