-A battery charger is a device that converts electrical energy from a utility (120/240V AC) to chemical energy and enables the battery to deliver electrical energy (12/24/36/48V DC).
-A rectifier converts the alternating current (AC) from a utility to direct current (DC) to charge batteries. It performs the following main functions:
oCharging
oControlling
oTerminating
-Battery charging is categorised as follows:
oLevel 1 charging: This is through the home socket, with a capacity of kW. Due to the low current rating offered at residential units, this is the slowest form of charging.
oLevel 2 charging: This is faster than level 1 charging, with a higher ampere rating, offering capacities such as kW and kW. On-board charging is largely through this level.
oLevel 3 charging: This is DC fast charging, where the battery is directly fed with high capacity (kW– kW of power) charging. With a high ampere rating, this is the fastest form of charging available, through dedicated service lines. This method recharges the battery to % of its capacity in – minutes.
-Battery chargers are specified using parameters such as output voltage, charging current, input voltage, single/multi-stage charging, dimensions, and weight.
