CEO’s Perspective

The market is highly competitive with a mixture of Western multinationals, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and local manufacturers.
Price is the major purchasing criteria for both power utilities and the commercial sector while industries are more brand conscious.
The dry type transformer market is expected to grow because of use in the O&G sector, wind power projects, and regulations restricting oil type transformer use in high-rise buildings.
Industrial customers and independent power producers prefer direct sales, while sales to utilities can be direct as well as through EPC contractors.
Original equipment manufacturers’ (OEMs) capability to extend quality after-sales service is a determining factor for the purchase of power transformers.

Power Transformers

Power transformers are static electrical equipment that transfer power by converting voltages and/or phase configuration to another level. Power transformers are primarily used in power generating stations (generator transformers) to raise the voltage level of the produced power from generation voltage to transmission voltage. They are then used to connect transmission systems designed for different voltages greater than 36kV such as 500kV, 362kV, 270kV, 220kV, 132kV, 110kV, and 66kV. Finally, in the distribution substations, they are used to reduce the voltage of the power delivered to the distribution system voltage levels, which are lower than 36 kV. The rating of power transformers is 3MVA and above.

Distribution Transformers
A distribution transformer reduces voltage to levels at which industrial, commercial, and household electrical equipment work (i.e., 110V, 440V, 3.3kV, 6.6kV, 11kV, 22kV and 33kV) . The rated capacity of distribution transformers depends on the consumers and their power requirements, which range from 15kVA to 500kVA for residential and office buildings. The standard ratings for distribution transformers include 15kVA, 25kVA, 63kVA, 100kVA, 250kVA, and 500kVA. For the scope of the study, distribution transformers up to 33kV and 3MVA are included.
