Summary
Source Market Insights; Japan provides an overview of the Japanese outbound market, analyzing market data and providing insights. This report provides a better understanding of the number of Japanese tourists going abroad, their spending habits and main destination markets.

Key Findings
- The depreciation of the Japanese yen in 2013 had a major impact on outbound travel in Japan, with outbound trips declining with -5.5% in 2013 to 17.5 million.

- Due to the depreciation of the yen, spending per trip dropped in 2013. Although slow growth is predicted in the future, Japanese tourists are now spending significantly less per trip.

- Japanese prefer to take short trips with many Japanese workers not taking their full amount of annual paid leave. The Golden week is the most popular time to travel.

- The largest age group travelling abroad were males aged between 40-49, accounting for 12.3% of the total. However, retirees are the fastest growing age group.

- Japan’s outbound tourism relies heavily on air connectivity, however flight tickets are expensive and international LCC flights are sparse, stopping potential tourists from taking international trips.

- Hawaii, Singapore and Spain are some of the few countries that saw an increase of Japanese tourists in 2013; China and South Korea both recorded declines due to frosty relations
