Biosensors are devices which sense biological signals/analyte and then use a transducer to change it to a corresponding electrical energy. Based on technology, the biosensors market is segmented into four major segments: electrochemical, optical, piezoelectric and thermal. From an application perspective, the market can be segmented as healthcare, food toxicity detection, industrial process control, agriculture, environment and bio-defense. Most biosensors find application in the healthcare domain, though agriculture and food industry are two other important applications areas. The healthcare biosensor market has been growing rapidly over the past five years with university and industrial researchers working consistently in the area to generate a range of innovative platforms. These solutions utilize technologies for pain-free, accurate, and highly sensitive diagnostics devices.

However, it is only in the last three years, biosensors have also made forays into the environment, process and security markets. Currently nanotechnology is playing an important role in the development of biosensors. Research and development into nanotechnology has helped to improve the sensitivity and performance of biosensors by using nanomaterials through new signal transduction technologies. The development of tools and processes used to fabricate, measure and image nanoscale objects, has led to the development of biosensors that can interact with extremely small molecules that need to be analyzed.
