BMI View:

We hold a positive outlook for Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar’s food and drink sectors on the back of rising incomes, favourable demographics and rapid urbanisation. Due to low income levels, we expect mass market offerings to present the most compelling growth opportunities. The carbonated softdrinks sector in all three markets is poised for strong growth due to large youth populations and low incomes. We do note that operational challenges pose a downside risk to our outlook.

Key Trends & Industry Developments



- Food sales per capita in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar (CLM) are still low by regional and global standards, and food continues to account for a great share of total household spending. Therefore, any increase in disposable incomes will automatically translate into greater food sales. As we expect strong economic activity in CLM over the next five years, we hold a positive growth outlook for sales of food and non-alcoholic drinks.

- In particular, we hold a very favourable outlook for Myanmar’s food industry. The country offers a sizeable consumer base compared with Cambodia and Laos. As it continues to open to foreign investors, we expect multinationals to expand in the country. Many food and drink manufacturers - including Nestlé, Unilever, The Coca-Cola Company and Carlsberg - have entered the market since 2013.
