BMI View:

Ghana's insurance market will increasingly present opportunities to investors and new entrants over the next few years as demand for life insurance and other important personal lines starts to grow from a very low base. Another contributing factor will be the introduction of more stringent capital requirements for local producers, which will surely benefit multinationals looking to gain a foothold in the market.

Key Updates And Forecasts:

- Despite a more bearish outlook for the Ghanaian economy overall, we have revised our growth forecasts for both the life and non-life insurance markets upwards for this quarter. Among the factors supporting
this outlook are the recent floods that struck the capital city of Accra in June 2015 and are likely to lead to a surge in demand for both personal and corporate covers. Gross life and non-life premiums should
grow by about 20% and 18% a year respectively through to 2019.
- The slightly faster rate of growth within the life insurance segment will see this market usurp the non-life sector as the larger of the two markets. Non-life covers will account for about 55% of total premiums in
2019, up from about 49% in 2014.
