Italy's gradual economic recovery supports our expectations for growth in both the life and non-life insurance sectors by the end of the current forecast period in 2019. Life insurance in particular is seeing strong growth due to a surge in demand for unit-linked products and wide ranging social pension reforms which are driving demand for private pensions and other later in life savings products. Growth is more subdued in the smaller non-life sector, where high unemployment rates and limited household spending capacity is restricting expenditure on non-essential insurable items, though we do note significant growth potential in key lines such as health and general liability insurance.


Key Updates And Forecasts
- Italy's previously generous public welfare system has come under pressure from government austerity measures leading to increases in the retirement age from 2015 and a reduction in benefits paid - as such
demand for private retirement plans and other life products is growing and we expect to see steady growth in life insurance premiums throughout the forecast period.
