Executive Summary

The past year has seen charitable income in England and Wales increase once again, according to the latest figures from the Charity Commission (CC), with total income rising by 5.1% in the year ending March 2014. The more stable economic environment, as well as a return to growth in individual donations and corporate giving in the UK, is thought to have helped fuel this rise, as has a sharp increase in mobile and digital giving, and the retail charity sector — retail charity shops now represent one of the fastest-growing areas within the wider retail market. New legislation surrounding payroll giving is also thought to have led to improvements within the charity sector, allowing charities to process payments made via payroll much easier.
